Ricoh Theta Spherical Camera For 360 Imaging

Ricoh Theta Spherical Camera For 360 Imaging

Ricoh Theta is the world's first fully spherical camera that lets you take 360-degree panorama photos in just ONE shot. That's 360 degrees of imaging all around you floor to ceiling, wall-to-wall, front to back.

Ricoh Theta new cam is small enough to fit in a pocket, or you can carry it in the bundled pouch that includes a belt loop. Theta includes two opposed hemispherical lenses, letting you capture a full 360-degree image in a single frame. The camera itself excludes a display or any manual settings at all, but given the super-wide angle you're shooting at here, there's not much framing to be done.

You can either capture images to the internal memory or to an iOS device connected via the ad-hoc WiFi network (Android support is coming later this year). If you're linked to a smartphone or tablet, you can use the device as a remote shutter release, which we'd definitely recommend -- with a lens on both sides, there's no way to hold the camera without several appendages ending up in each shot.

Acer Launches C720 Chromebook with Haswell CPU

Last year, one of the hottest selling laptops was Acer’s C710 Chromebook. Part of that of course was the fact that it was one of the least expensive laptops around, priced at $199 for the base model. There were drawbacks to that model of course: the display wasn’t great, it had 2GB RAM, 16GB SSD, and battery life was rated at up to four hours with the 37Wh 4-cell battery. Today, Acer announced the updated C720, now sporting a Haswell CPU in place of the previous model’s Sandy Bridge based Celeron 847. Here’s the quick specifications overview.

Acer Chromebook      C720-2800 Specifications
Processor                    Intel Celeron 2955U
                                   (Dual-core 1.4GHz, 2MB L3, 22nm, 15W)
Memory                      4GB DDR3L
Graphics                     Intel HD Graphics
                                  (10 EUs at 200-1000MHz)
Display                       11.6" Anti-glare
Storage                      16GB SSD
Networking                802.11a/b/g/n WiFi
Battery/Power            4-cell (?), up to 8.5 hours
Pricing         MSRP: $249
$240 Pre-order at Amazon.com

There are a few major changes, starting of course with the Celeron 2955U processor. While that’s going to be the slowest Haswell CPU around, the 1.4GHz clock ends up being at least 27% faster than the Celeron 847 based on clock speed alone, and architectural enhancements mean it’s more likely to be in the 30-40% faster range. Acer states that the new C720 will boot up in less than seven seconds, allowing you to get straight to work (or fun). Along with the CPU upgrade, the iGPU will also be better/faster. Intel calls the base level graphics “HD Graphics” in all of their recent Celeron range, but where Sandy Bridge had 6 EUs with DX10 capability, Ivy Bridge added DX11 and Haswell increases the EUs to 10. It’s not a performance powerhouse iGPU by any stretch, but it should be sufficient for most uses.

RAM also gets an upgrade to 4GB this round, with DDR3L memory reducing the power use. Perhaps more importantly, the display has been updated to have an anti-glare coating. It’s still a 1366x768 panel, but the use of anti-glare instead of gloss means outdoor operation of the C720 will be far more tolerable. The chassis has also been refined, and Acer notes that the new model is 30% thinner, and the 2.76 lbs. weight is 11% less than the C710 weight of 3.1 pounds.

Wrapping up the changes and upgrades, the webcam is still present, and it’s now an HD webcam (I’m pretty sure the previous model was not HD). There’s also a USB 3.0 port along with a USB 2.0 port, allowing faster transfer of files from the appropriate hardware. Given the limited storage capacity of the 16GB SSD (most likely eMMC), which is one area that didn’t get upgraded on the base model, I’m not sure how important USB 3.0 will prove to be, but it’s certainly a welcome inclusion. HDMI output and the SD card reader continue to be present as well.

All of this results in not just better performance, but you get significantly better battery life. Acer rates the C720 at up to 8.5 hours, so more than double the battery life of the C710. It’s not clear if the battery is still the same capacity or if that changed as part of the update, but we know that Haswell is capable of lower power states than Ivy Bridge, and significantly lower power states than Sandy Bridge, so the improved battery life is expected.

The Acer C720-2800 will be available later this month, with pre-orders supposedly going up today on BestBuy.com and Amazon.com. At present they do not appear to be on the respective websites, but I will update with the appropriate links. Pricing is higher than the previous generation C710, with an MSRP of $249, but with all the various upgrades I don’t think the $50 increase is too much. The more pertinent question will be how the C720 stands up to its Chromebook competitors like the HP Chromebook 11, which has an IPS display and a 2.3 pound weight, but it uses an Exynos 5250 GAIA SoC with 2GB RAM and lacks USB 3.0 and the SD card reader. That’s currently available for $279, and hopefully we can answer the question of how the various models compare in the coming months.

Samsung Galaxy Round - World's First Flexible Smartphone

Samsung Galaxy Round - World's First Flexible Smartphone

The world's first flexible smartphone by Samsung is on the way to mark the history of smartphone. The suggestive name of the product is Samsung Galaxy Round. While it's not clear what the product will have to offer, it certainly must be a mobile device considering the name, but also the product's description - essentially a collection of keywords that indicate the Galaxy Round will be a mobile device.

The same Galaxy Round name is mentioned by a South Korean publication, which links the product name to Samsung’s plans to launch a smartphone with a flexible display in the following days. Asiae is also reporting that the product will cost around 1 million won in South Korea, or around $930.

In case you missed the announcements from earlier today, both LG and Samsung issued press releases announcing their developments in the flexible display smartphone niche.

Nixeus NX-VUE27D A 27 $450 WQHD (2560x1440) IPS LED DP-Only Monitor

In August 2012, Nixeus launched the VUE27, a 27" WQHD (2560x1440) S-IPS LED monitor with a $430 price tag. However, the high demand led to a backlog and the monitor currently retails close to $500. The follow-up was a 30" WQXGA version priced at $700, the Nixeus VUE 30. As expected, the price has now increased to $890. By providing US-based service / warranty, they managed to win over quite a big segment of the market which was being served by eBay sellers based in Korea. However, with Monoprice getting into the game, the competition in this market has become hot. In order to counter the pricing pressure, Nixeus is introducing a new model, the NX-VUE27D. While the earlier models had a wide variety of input ports, Nixeus is making this one DisplayPort only. Fortunately, for the $450 pricing, a Mini-DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable as well as a DisplayPort cable are bundled.

The claimed features specifications of the NX-VUE27D are as below:

27" IPS LED Backlight Display Monitor
    2560 x 1440 WQHD
Compatible with Thunderbolt and DisplayPort output devices
    16.7 million True Colors
    100% sRGB Color Gamut
    VESA Mounts 3.937" x 3.937" (100mm x 100mm)
Height Adjustable Base Stand with Tilt, Swivel and 90° Pivot
Edge to Edge Plasma Infused Glass to reduce reflection
    Thin Bezel Design
    2 Year Limited Warranty
    Brightness: 380cd/m2
    Native Contrast Ratio: 1000:1
    Viewing Angles:178° horizontal/178° vertical
    Refresh Rate: 60Hz
Response Time: 6ms (Gray to Gray)
    Pixel Pitch:0.233mm
    Input Port: DisplayPort
    Power Consumption:72 watts
Accessories included: Mini-DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable (for compatibility with Mac, Macbooks, and Thunderbolt devices), DisplayPort cable, Quick Set-up guide and external power supply (North America)

Boston Dynamics' WildCat

Since the beginning of the modern engineering science engineers try to copy and implement natural motions of animals and humans into the machines they construct. At present we know about several projects of Boston Dynamics  funded by DARPA , such as the charged by wire Cheetah, Atlas, the anthropomorphic robot, and the wireless BigDog. Not so long ago Boston Dynamics released only a video of their latest project called WildCat – another semi-autonomous animal-like robot. Right under the YouTube video they tell us to visit their website for more information, but at the moment the company didn’t published anything there.

So, what do we see from the video? In the description below is stated that the four-legged vehicle is able to run at 16 mph (25 km/h) and is funded by the M3 program from DARPA. While watching the video we hear the noise and see the smoke of starting and continuous work of a four-stroke gasoline or diesel engine. Radiators with propellers on both sides tell us that the engine is liquid cooled. Probably the legs are moved by some kind of pneumatic or hydraulic system and the whole thing is obviously controlled by electronics. Electronics require electricity, therefore the mechanic animal should have some sort of a battery and an alternator. But, until Boston Dynamics reveal the information officially, we can not know any details for sure.

World's First 3D Toothbrush - Blizzident Toothbrush

World's First 3D Toothbrush

How much does poor dental hygiene cost us when we’re sitting in the dentist's chair, wishing we’d remembered to brush for a full three minutes, twice a day? Here is the latest invention of IT world The Blizzident toothbrush, which is made possible by two intersecting technologies 3D scanning and 3D printing.

The result is a toothbrush shaped exactly like your teeth. You simply bite it, chomp for six seconds, and voila: every single one of your teeth is perfectly brushed in both an up and down and side to side motion. Or so, at least, it's claimed.

Getting a Blizzident is relatively straightforward. You go to a dentist and get her to take an impression of your teeth, as she would for many everyday dental procedures. Then you send it to a dental laboratory, and they digitize the results, which are uploaded to Blizzident.

Because it's shaped to your teeth, there's little danger you'll find anyone else in your household using your Blizzident.

Currently, Blizzident costs $300. It will probably get cheaper; and if it gets you (or your child) to clean your teeth, it might be worth the investment.

V-Tent solar-panel parking system

One of the main reasons why electric vehicles have failed to take off as the primary means of personal transport is that the infrastructure to keep these vehicles charged hasn’t really been developed at the same level as the ones for fuel run vehicles. Even though a lot of countries have started to provide recharging stations for electric vehicles, users don’t like staying put in a particular spot for 30-40 minutes just to get enough charge on their vehicles to reach a destination. However, designer Hakan Gursu has proposed a rather unique solution to electric vehicle recharging woes. The designer has come up with a design that he calls the V-Tent and intends for it to serve as a solar recharging station as well as a handy parking spot that will accommodate electric vehicles exclusively.

V-Tent solar-panel parking system could make electric vehicles very popular
The eco-friendly parking system boasts of a v-shaped canopy that is fully collapsible. The V-Tent can be erected and dismantled at will which makes it an excellent solution for private and public parking spaces as well as a recharging station/parking space for festivals, travelers on the road, scientists and explorers on the go and even media personnel covering an event away from the city. The sustainable parking lot is designed to also provide a safe shelter that can prevent wind, water, snow and dust from dirtying or damaging the vehicle’s outer surface.

When used as a public parking/charging space, the V-Tent uses a fee-based system where users can pay for the charging and parking using their credit cards. The user interface shows estimated charging times for the vehicle. The inner surface of the V-Tent comes with specially created micro-ventilation enabled fabric which allows the tent to ‘breathe’ and prevents excess heat buildup inside and allows the structure to maintain its integrity in the long run.
